How Do Sliding Gates Work?

Sliding gates are a popular choice with homeowners looking for an added level of protection for their home without compromising on space. But, just how do sliding gates work? And how much can you expect to spend on them?

We discuss it all and more in our blog below. Read on to find out the mechanics of sliding gates, the different types, and the benefits of owning them.

So…how do sliding gates work?

Sliding gates work by using a single leaf (a moveable panel on a sliding gate) to move horizontally across a driveway - allowing it to open and close. A tracked-toothed rack located at the bottom of the gate acts as a gear mechanism that enables the gate to move in both directions.

Fixed neatly on one side, a single motor is used to power the gate, whilst grooved wheels are located underneath the gate at different intervals ensuring it moves in the correct direction. It’s a relatively straightforward process, but groundwork is needed in order to lay the grooved tracking. Otherwise, the gate won’t work as intended.

What are the different types of sliding gates?

If you’re looking to purchase sliding gates, but are unsure what style would best suit your needs and your home, fortunately, there are several types available. This includes:

Softwood sliding gates

Softwood sliding gates are made using timber, typically from trees such as pine, redwood, larch, fir, or cedar. Thanks to the different types of timber used, these gates can come in different colours such as black, brown, and light beige.

Hardwood sliding gates

Hardwood sliding gates are made from stronger materials than softwood, including Iroko wood. They can be created to have manual or electric functions, and also come in a variety of finishes.

Telescopic sliding gates

Telescopic wooden gates differ from sliding gates as they contain multiple leaves that overlap each other when closed - as they move simultaneously. These types of sliding gates are ideal for tight spaces as they take up less room.

What are the benefits of sliding gates?

There are several benefits you can experience when purchasing a pair of sliding gates, including:

Space saving

One benefit of sliding gates is that they are space-saving. As a result of the fact they only move sideways instead of swinging outwards, so you don’t need to worry about having clearance in front of them to avoid damage.

What’s more, they’re also ideal for those with uneven driveways where other types of gates are more of a struggle to install. Ultimately, they’re an ideal option for those with smaller, restrictive spaces.

Higher weather resistance

Sliding gates can also be more weather-resistant than other types of outdoor gates. This is because they’re typically made from stronger, durable materials - such as Iroko Wood

Despite it being a wooden material, it is sealed with an external oil that repels water. But, this has to be applied once a year to ensure it is maintained and that the wood doesn’t become damaged.

Increased security

Purchasing a set of sliding gates can also help when it comes to increasing levels of security in your house. This is mostly because they are difficult to force open, and can be automated to stay locked when you leave the house.

But also, just the presence of these gates alone can deter criminals from forcing entry into the house - as they know the chances of being successful are lower.

Sliding gates: FAQS

Do you need planning permission for a sliding gate?

Whether you need planning permission for the sliding gates you purchase depends on the ones you buy. Generally, if your gates are no bigger than 2 metres in height, you won’t need to seek planning permission.

However, if your gates open up onto a public highway, then the gates can only be a metre in height or less. Otherwise, you will need to seek planning permission. To work out the size your gate needs to be, you can use our calculator.
