Gate Posts & Fixing Guide

Choosing the Right Posts for Your Gate

The right post setup helps keep your gate secure, level and working properly over time. This guide explains the main post options we offer, whether your gate is fixing between brickwork, concrete posts, or needs structural posts set into the ground.

Standard wall posts supplied with gate kits

These are ideal when your gate is being fitted between brick or concrete posts and you want a neat, matching timber finish.

Standard sizes available

  • Side & garden gates: Pair of 95mm x 45mm matching wall posts with beads
  • Driveway & asymmetrical gates: Pair of 95mm x 70mm matching wall posts with beads
  • 95mm sits flat against the wall, and the 45mm and 70mm protrudes from the wall
These posts are designed to fix onto the inside face of brickwork or concrete posts, giving you a clean finish while keeping the gate properly supported.

Main features

  • Ideal for gates fitted between brick or concrete posts
  • Designed to fix to the inside face of the opening
  • Made to match your gate timber in Scandinavian redwood or Iroko hardwood
  • Privacy bead glued and pinned to cover the gap between gate and post
  • Angled top helps prevent water build-up on the post

Other wall post options

  • When just one post is required, you can buy a single post separately
  • You can also purchase posts without beads for fixing onto the back of brickwork

When one post needs to go into the ground

For a single gate where one side fixes to a brick wall or concrete post, but the other side needs a post set into the ground for the gate to close against, a longer wall post can often be used.

  • Use a 95mm x 70mm wall post approximately 500–600mm longer than the gate height
  • The additional length is concreted into the ground
  • We recommend this is supplied in Iroko hardwood
This is a good solution for many single gate installations, but for larger or heavier gates, a more substantial post arrangement is the better option.

Posts for larger gates or openings

Where a gate needs structural support from posts set into the ground, there are several options depending on the size of the gate and the look you want to achieve.

Galvanised steel posts

A strong and reliable option for larger gates, especially driveway gates.

  • 75mm x 75mm as a guide for gates below approx. 1500mm wide
  • 100mm x 100mm as a guide for gates above approx. 1800mm wide
  • Posts should generally be purchased 500–1000mm longer than gate height so enough can be concreted into the ground

Matching timber sleeves for steel posts

If you want the strength of steel posts without the industrial look, we can also supply matching timber sleeves.

  • Suitable for both common steel post sizes
  • Made to match the timber of the gate
  • Supplied with a pinnacle cap to help water run off the top

Timber post alternatives

Other post options can also be used depending on the installation and finish required.

  • 100mm x 100mm for gates below approx. 1500mm wide
  • 150mm x 150mm for gates above approx. 1800mm wide
  • 200mm x 200mm for gates above approx. 2500mm wide
  • Options include pressure treated softwood, oak posts, and weather-resistant hardwood posts

Cladding timber posts to match the gate

If you want larger structural posts to better match the look of the gate, we can also supply matching finishing materials.

  • Matching T&G boards supplied at 85mm finished width
  • Can be supplied in suitable lengths for cutting and cladding on site
  • Bespoke cappings can also be provided for the top of the post
As a general rule: smaller gates can often work well with lighter post options, while wider and heavier gates usually need a more substantial structural setup.
