Calculate Your Gate Sizes

Garden and Side Gate Measurements

To calculate your gate size, follow the guide below and make the necessary deductions for posts and fitting gaps.

How to measure the width for a garden or side gate

Garden / Side Gate Width

  • If the width top and bottom are not the same, choose the smallest measurement.
  • Deduct 30mm from the total opening width to allow a 15mm fitting gap on each side.
  • If you are ordering wall posts, also deduct 45mm per post from your overall brick-to-brick measurement.
  • Two wall posts = 90mm in total.

Example: For a side gate with a brick-to-brick opening of 970mm, requiring two wall posts.

970 − 90 − 30 = 850mm

Garden / Side Gate Height

  • Order the gate height from the bottom of the gate to the top of the horns at the side.
  • We recommend leaving a 30mm gap below the gate during installation.

Driveway Gates Measurements

To calculate your gate size, follow the guide below and make the necessary deductions for posts and fitting gaps.

How to measure the width for driveway gates

Driveway Gate Width

  • If the width top and bottom are not the same, choose the smallest measurement.
  • Deduct 45mm from the total opening width to allow a 15mm fitting gap on each side and in the centre.
  • If you are ordering wall posts, also deduct 70mm per post from your overall brick-to-brick measurement.
  • Two wall posts = 140mm in total.

Example: For a driveway gate with a brick-to-brick opening of 3535mm, requiring two wall posts.

3535 − 140 − 45 = 3350mm

Driveway Gate Height

  • The height is measured from the bottom of the gate to the top of the horns at the sides.
  • We recommend allowing a 30mm gap below the gate for ground clearance.
  • The height to the centre of the gate depends on the style:
    • Lymm and Tarporley designs typically rise 100mm–150mm to the centre depending on width.
    • Swan Neck and Chester designs typically rise around 200mm to the centre.

Asymmetrical Gates Measurements

Asymmetrical gates are measured in the same way as standard driveway gates, but once you have your total gate width, you then split it into the two individual gate widths required.

How to measure asymmetrical driveway gates

Asymmetrical Gate Width

  • If the width top and bottom are not the same, choose the smallest measurement.
  • Deduct 45mm from the total opening width to allow a 15mm fitting gap on each side and in the centre.
  • If you are ordering wall posts, also deduct 70mm per post from your overall brick-to-brick measurement.
  • Two wall posts = 140mm in total.
  • Once you have your total gate width, divide it into the two individual gate widths required.

Example: For a brick-to-brick opening of 3635mm, requiring two wall posts.

3635 − 140 − 45 = 3450mm total gate width

If you want a 1/3 and 2/3 split:

One gate = 1150mm   |   Other gate = 2300mm

Asymmetrical Gate Height

  • The height is measured from the bottom of the gate to the top of the horns at the sides.
  • We recommend allowing a 30mm gap below the gates for ground clearance.

Garage Doors Measurements

To calculate your garage door size, follow the guide below and make the necessary deductions for fitting gaps and frame allowances.

How to measure garage doors

Garage Door Width

Garage doors are rebated in the centre so one door closes over the other.

  • Deduct 30mm from the total opening width to allow a 10mm gap on each outer edge and a 10mm gap in the centre.
  • Allow for the 70mm framework on each side when considering your overall opening.
  • The centre gap allows one door to close neatly over the other.

Example: For a garage opening width of 2470mm with 70mm frame.

2470 − 140 − 30 = 2300mm total door width

Garage Door Height

  • The height is measured from the bottom of the doors to the top of the doors.
  • We recommend allowing a 20mm gap below the doors for ground clearance.
  • We recommend allowing 15mm between the top of the doors and frame.
  • Ensure the opening is level, as uneven ground can affect the clearance required.

Example: For a garage opening height of 2490mm with 70mm frame.

2405 − 70 − 20 - 15 = 2300mm total door width

Sliding Gates Measurements

Sliding gates are made to the exact width of your opening, with an additional overhang section to allow the gate to slide fully open.

How to measure sliding gates

Sliding Gate Width

  • The main gate width should match your exact opening size (no deductions required).
  • An additional overhang section is required to allow the gate to slide fully open.
  • This overhang is typically around 800mm, depending on the design and setup.
  • Ensure you have enough space to one side of the opening to accommodate this overhang.

Example: For an opening of 3000mm.

Gate width = Order 3000mm (+ 800mm overhang)

Sliding Gate Setup

  • The gate is supplied in separate sections which are bolted together on site.
  • All fixing points are pre-drilled, and threaded bar is supplied.
  • This allows for easier transport and installation of larger gates.
